Libros Schmibros Lending Library is a Boyle Heights based project that champions the transformative value of literature in everyday lives. This September we’re launching Bicycle Libraries, a unique volunteer opportunity.

On Fridays and Saturdays in September we propose to roll out a fleet of specially outfitted bikes with the capacity to carry up to 40 books apiece. Volunteers are asked to take the bikes to locations in Boyle Heights and East LA, giving away books they’ve handpicked to the general public.

The program will entail a volunteer showing up the day before to select books, log them into a database, and hand-stamp them so folks will remember who gave them the book. The next day, volunteers show up and RIDE! Itineraries will be determined by Libros, and may require the use of public transit. Metro TAP cards will be given to all volunteers who need transit to deliver books, as well as a Libros t-shirt and specially designed messenger bag for everybody.

After the ride is over, volunteers will return to Libros and write up their experiences, especially any conversations about books.

Fridays will have an early afternoon ride, primarily focused on 1st Street and local high schools. On Friday evenings there will be a ride to the farmer’s market on our own Mariachi Plaza.

Saturday itineraries will range farther, to predetermined spots in and around the Eastside. Rides will begin at noon, and all riders are to return to Libros by 5 pm to write down what happened.

12 rides in total, with the potential to distribute up to 1,500 books in the community.

If you think you’d like to participate, we ask that you attend an orientation meeting on August 27 at 6 pm, at Libros Schmibros in Boyle Heights. At the meeting we’ll explain all details, and have open sign-ups for rides.
